Turned wooden boxes can be both ornamental and functional and are pleasant to hold and to use. They are useful for storing jewellery or other small items you don’t want to lose!
Some exotic timbers are used for turned wooden boxes to give added interest. Paul makes wooden boxes with push/slide on lids or with threaded lids by hand cutting threads on the lathe. The softer woods aren’t really suitable for cutting threads but if you really want a box with a screw on lid made from a softer wood, there are ways around the problem so feel free to ask.
Different types of boxes
Beyond the basic box, Paul makes needle cases which are based on an ancient Roman design. They have a compartment for the needles and integral bobbins for storing a few different threads so you have all you need in a pocket sized case! Paul also occasionally makes stemmed jewellery boxes with an external pierced rim for storing earrings. The toadstool boxes made from yew are always popular and make great ornaments as well as having being somewhere to store odds and ends.
Choice woods for special boxes
Paul likes to use some of the more exotic woods for boxes. Small pieces of ornate wood make interesting boxes and tactile conversation pieces. Paul looks out for special pieces of wood with interesting grain, eye catching figure or burrs.

Gifts and commissions
Turned wooden boxes can have so many uses and make great gifts. It is always a great part of the woodturning experience to hold an exquisitely made wooden box, taking off the top to see what’s inside. Paul is happy to accept commissions for turned presentation boxes which could hold a treasured piece of jewellery or keepsake.
