Turned and coloured wooden bowls

The character and natural features found in wood lend themselves to its use for production of wooden bowls but wooden bowls don’t always have to be wood coloured – well, not completely! Paul uses wood as the base material for the bowl and adds combinations of colour and texture to work with the natural features of the wood to make something extra special.

Using colour to enhance

Some of the plainer woods can be used as a blank canvas, allowing the colour and texture to speak for themselves but figured wood can also work well in combination with the application of colour, which can enhance the figure in the wood.
Each wooden bowl shown here has been turned and finished by hand and each one is unique.

Gesso textured bowls

For some of the coloured and textured bowls, the outside of the bowl is given a base coat of acrylic gesso, which is textured to give a more ceramic look with one of a number of different textures. The colours are acrylic airbrush paints, applied and blended with an airbrush and sealed with a lacquer. A wide range of colour combinations and textures are produced with this method.

Other colouring techniques

Some of the other coloured bowls have a simple grain fill to enhance the natural features of the wood. Others are dyed or treated with other processes such as scorching, sandblasting, carving etc. to enhance the natural beauty of the wood.
