The word tools covers a whole host of items we use in the craft
of
woodturning. From
the lathe itself to the gouges, skew chisels, grinders, abrasives and
other items we expect to find in the
workshop through
to the videos, books and turning magazines, are all tools of the trade,
each and every one plays an important part in the development of turning
skills.

Lathes, gouges,
skew chisels, grinders and abrasives, all are tools of the trade.
-
Videos, books and turning
magazines all provide a good source of information.
-
All play a vital and important
part in the development of woodturning skills.
Most of the tools used
in the Creative Woodturning workshop come from the major suppliers that
are found on the doorstep in nearby Sheffield, these include tools from
Henry Taylor,
Hamlet and
Robert Sorby with the latter
company also supplying some very specialised tools for spiralling,
chatterwork and deep hollowing. There are also tools from
Craft
Supplies, in Millers Dale, Derbyshire and other, mainly
workshop and
automotive
tools from the excellent Fine Tools company in nearby Chesterfield.

Deep hollowing
tools including the Big Brother and Goliath from Hamlet Craft Tools.
Another major supplier to the
world of woodturning is the
Axminster Power Tool Centre, apart from
offering courses for the woodturner, they supply most things from their
own branded lathes that come in all sizes from bench top hobby lathes to
professional lathes capable of holding massive blanks. Finally a mention
must be made for
Ebay auctions on the internet, they often have second-hand woodworking tools,
but please be very careful,
especially when buying timber,
I have been caught out.

All tools are capable of cutting
well if they are LOOKED AFTER and kept SHARP.

Cheap grinders can be further
enhanced by adding good quality grinding wheels.
All tools are capable of cutting
well but only if they are looked after and well maintained. It is not essential to buy
an expensive bench grinder, a good set of wheels on a relatively cheap
grinder usually works very well. Pink wheels from the
Peter Child
company fit the bill for woodturning. |
