"I explore the beauty of wood through surface decoration of
three-dimensional wood art"
WOODTURNING
Ever since he began using a lathe as a teenager, Steve Sinner has
had a long standing love of the beauty of wood and the technical
challenge of turning large thin walled vessels. Steve specialises in
deep hollow vessels, usually classic forms having surface decorations
either by overlayed meticulous patterns in metal leaf or coloured by acrylic.
EQUIPMENT
Steve's workshop houses five lathes including a small metal lathe
used to make many special tools and equipment. His favourite lathe for
his large work is the
Powermatic 3520. His preferred method of deep
hollowing is a trapped boring bar system, using a bar of his own
design, (for details see American Woodturner, Fall 2001), and
various cutting and scraping tips. He finds the cutting tools
from New Zealand, including the Exocet and Rolly Monro's new design
are the most efficient for deep hollowing. Wall thickness is
controlled by the use of a laser attachment (again, his own design)
added to the boring bar.
