JULIE HERYET
Julie Heryet admits her first steps into the realms of woodturning were taken
almost by accident.
During years living in New Zealand in the mid-1990s, Julie enrolled
on a woodworking evening course. In a moment of workshop
exploration, she found a lathe in a dusty corner, persuaded the
tutor to let her ‘have a play’ and was immediately smitten.
THE ADVENTURE BEGINS
The purchase of a second-hand lathe
and a few basic tools soon followed. Guided by
the experience, patience and kindness of members of the West
Auckland Woodturners Guild, the next few steps toward learning the
basic skills were taken. Julie's adventure into the world of
woodturning had begun
Returning to the UK in 1998, Julie
set about developing those skills, using every opportunity to
practice and to learn from others. Julie feels of particular
importance has been her membership of two local woodturning clubs;
Avon & Bristol Woodturners (affiliated members
of the Association of Woodturners GB) and the Gloucestershire Association of Woodturners.
AXMINSTER POWER
TOOLS SHOW
Working with wet wood, producing
hollow forms and thread chasing have now become particular favourites
for Julie. Starting to enter competitions, it was with some of this type of work Julie has
had
some success at both

club
and national level; most recently at the
Axminster Power Tools Show
in 2002, winning first prize in the open category and also taking the Tony Boase Award for best turning in
the show.
SCHOLARSHIP -
INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR
In July 2001 Julie was awarded a
scholarship to attend the
AWGB's 8th International Seminar. A
wonderful opportunity and what Julie describes as an "absolutely stunning seminar". One
of Julie's proudest woodturning 'moments' came in August 2002 when she was entered onto
the roll of the
Register of Professional Turners.
