JIMMY CLEWES - TURNAROUND.
For those of you who have never had the
pleasure of meeting
Jimmy Clewes on a course, at an
exhibition or at a woodturning demonstration, what you see in this
video is typically Jimmy. He is probably the most relaxed,
laid back turner on the circuit, full of wit and humour.
Not only is Jimmy an excellent turner, he is an extremely able
communicator and this helps with whatever he is doing, be it
teaching on a course, demonstrating or in this case educating
students through the medium of a video.
Jimmy is a regular contributor to woodturning magazines and is a
member of the
Register Of Professional turners.
HIGH QUALITY FILMING.
This video has been shot from a range of different camera angles,
giving the viewer a good insight of the tools, the timber and what
is being done at all times, Turnaround is available on both video
and DVD formats and has a total running time of well over two hours. |
TURNAROUND - SECTION ONE THE INTRODUCTION.
The video opens with
Jimmy in his workshop, relaxed, cup of tea in hand where he gives a brief
outline of what to expect from the Turnaround video. He then
demonstrates on a spindle blank a number of different cuts using the
most popular tools, the use of drive and live centres and then
mounting timber in the lathe which for this video is the Wivamac
1200.
THE PROJECTS - END GRAIN VASE, COLOURED PLATTER & LIDDED OYSTER
BOX.
The first of the three
projects on this video is an end grained vase with a natural edge
turned from wet sycamore. Drying the wet sycamore is another of
Jimmy's "party tricks" in that he sprays meths onto the surface and
sets light to it, explaining that the meths burns clear of the
timber's surface without damage. This should not be attempted
without following all the safety precautions mentioned in the video.
The rippled and quilted maple platter introduces the use of colour
with
Chestnut's excellent spirit dyes,
Jimmy also talks about raising the grain and again uses meths to
help with this. The third and final project is the beautiful lidded
oyster box turned from a very well marked piece of cocobolo.
SHARPENING AND CONCLUSION.
The final section of
the video concentrates on sharpening the tools with the use of the
Wolverine System, working with seven different tools from the
roughing gouge through to the long grind bowl gouge.
Throughout I found this to be one of the most informative and useful
videos I have ever watched. Thanks to Avanticom
in Hartlepool for the
video. Review....Mike Swain |
