Woodturning UK, Tim Skilton Power Sanding Pads - March 2003

TIM SKILTON POWER SANDING PADS
There is a growing number of power sanding pads available on the market here in the UK, some good some not so good, the samples I've tested for this have the words "Long Life" printed on the header card, they are certainly more durable than any other I've tried.

MADE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA
As often happens a product isn't as good as it could be and someone with a degree of initiative looks at the product and finds a way to make it better, in this case the initiative came from South Autralian woodturner Tim Skilton, the new pads are now made to his design and have been improved in a number of ways.

INOVATIVE FEATURES
Tim Skilton's pad features an hexagonal shank for better grip and an angled head that is made from two different densities of foam rubber giving the right combination of flexibility and toughness and enables the it to be used in areas like undercut rims of bowls. The head is made from the best available materials so that it resists heat, meaning the hook and loop system stays on.

SIZES AVAILABLE
The power sanding pads are now available in a range of three sizes, 1", 2" and 3".  The 1" pad was originally designed for woodcarvers and not intended for woodturning, I found it to be quite useful and I'm sure other turners will soon be adding one to their toolkit.

HIGH QUALITY LONG LASTING DISCS
Also available from Tim Skilton are some very good quality discs made by the renowned 3M company, these come in a wide range of grit sizes and in diameters to fit the three different pads.  Each pack contains a set of instructions for the use of the sanding pad, these at first might seem quite obvious but they are relevant, simple words like "LIGHT PRESSURE" are important.  The Tim Skilton pads and discs should be available at all leading woodturner's supplies, special thanks must go to BRIMARC from Warwick, for the supply of the pads and 3M discs for this review, they can be contacted on 01926 493389.
