CHESTNUT SPIRIT STAIN
The first issue in our "Tried And
Tested" section features the Spirit Stain from the
Chestnut Products
company in Beckenham. This is a quick drying wood dye
manufactured from high grade trade quality, fade resistant materials that
are non
grain raising. The dye comes in a wide range of wooden shades and rainbow colours, these include Black, Blue, Green,
Orange, Purple, Red, Royal Blue, Yellow and White. Each of
these colours can be intermixed and thinned to get almost any effect
you could wish for from bold panels of solid colour to delicate
washes.
SPIRIT STAIN IN USE
All of Chestnut's products have a set of good, clear and easy to
follow instructions printed on the pack label, the stain is easily
applied by brush, cloth or spray gun. When sprayed the stain can be
thinned with methylated spirit or cellulose thinners, on larger
pieces it was found better to apply a liberal coat of the dye and
then wipe off any surplus with a cloth, on smaller pieces several
light coats proved the best finish, leaving about ten minutes
between the coats. As this is a spirit based product no noticable
raising of the grain was found on any of the timbers it was tested
on.
AVAILABILITY
Chestnut's
Spirit Stain is available in a wide range of bottles and containers
in sizes from 250ml up to large 5 litre containers and can be found

of most good woodworking and woodturning stockists. The
rainbow range of stains was used on a variety of turned pieces and
the results were easily achieved and very pleasing. The gallery
piece "Evergreen"
was turned as a test from Tiger Maple and sprayed with four thin
coats of Chestnut's Green stain and finished with the same companies
Acrylic Coating, resulting in a really stunning effect. |
