Woodturning UK, Tim Skilton Lambswool Buffs - July 2004

TIM SKILTON LAMBSWOOL BUFFS.
Following on from his undoubted success with
the Power Sanding
Pads, Tim Skilton has developed the process a little
further by adding lambswool buffs to the range. Now making it
possible to go from an unsanded finish through to a buffed shine in
simple and easy stages.
2" AND 3" SIZES AVAILABLE.
The new buffing pads are designed with a velcro hook and loop system
to fit in place of the abrasive on the power sanding pads. The
buffs come in two sizes, 3" and 2".
WELL MADE AND LONG LASTING.
Although at a quick glance the buffs may look expensive with a price
tag around the £10 mark, they are natural lambswool and appear to be
very well made and long lasting and although it is not mentioned on
the pack, I washed out the larger pad I had in a mild detergent and
it came up clean and new looking with no problems. |
BETTER RESULTS THAN THE SYNTHETIC ALTERNATIVE.
Over the last few
weeks I have been using the new
Tim Skilton buffs on polished
finishes, cutting back the finished piece in the usual way with 0000
steel wool loaded with Chestnut's woodwax 22, allowing this to dry
off and then buffing to whatever level off polish the piece needed.
As a comparison I tried the same process but using a synthetic
buffing pad to finish off, there was a definite advantage gained
using the Tim Skilton buffs over the synthetic alternatives, and I
found that if I increased the speed of the drill or increased the
pressure on the pad, the synthetic buffs tended to remove the finish
where as the Skilton buffs didn't.
Many thanks go to
Brimarc for the supply of the
The Tim Skilton
pads and buffs for the review. Both pads and buffs should be available at all leading woodturner's
supplies, they can be
contacted on 01926 493389.
